The Perspectives Program is a collection of online career courses offered and developed by the VSE Career Centre to support you with your professional and personal development.
You will be encouraged to think critically, use resources, and work through activities designed to support you with your career discovery and decision-making process. Perspectives Courses will introduce you to career resources to support your professional and personal development; provide you tools for local, national, and international job search; and encourage you to connect with the VSE Career Centre for further guidance. You will also be supported and encouraged to connect and network with current BIE students, alumni, employers, and other stakeholders.

Submitting strong applications is crucial to securing the experience you desire. Doing so will not only increase your chances of moving forward with the application process, but also establish a positive first impression with the recruiting team. Subsequently, it is important to ensure your application is able to present your skills in a cohesive and professional manner.
This course will help you elevate your applications by guiding you through the cover letter and resume writing process as well as help you write to specific positions and industries. You will also gain insight into other aspects of the application process like managing employer expectations and keeping track of your applications. You’ll interact with various materials like infographics, resume samples, and checklists throughout the course.
This course will familiarize you with the concept of personal brand in the professional world, including building self-reliance and telling your personal story.
The Professional and Personal Development Course provided by the VSE Career Centre aims at equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop their personal brand in the professional world. The course includes three main sections: Self-Discovery, Personal Branding, and Utilising your Branding Tools.
The Self-Discovery section will provide students with the opportunity to explore their interests, skills, strengths, motivators, and purpose through comprehensive assessments. This section will lay the groundwork for students to build their personal brand. The Personal Branding module will teach students how to leverage their discovered strengths, interests, and skills to create a unique personal brand. The Utilising Your Personal Brand section will provide students with tips and opportunities on how they can effectively use their personal brand in a professional setting to advance their careers.
Throughout the course, various assessment tools and resources will be introduced to help students identify and develop their critical thinking, emotional capital, talents, and motivators. Students can receive feedback on their completed assessments from the Career Centre to refine their personal brand and effectively articulate how their profile aligns with the opportunities they seek to secure.The course will also encourage critical thinking and self-reflection throughout all sections, helping students develop their analytical skills and approach problems and opportunities with a thoughtful and strategic mindset.
By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the concept of personal branding and the tools necessary to build a strong and unique personal brand that will enable them to achieve their career goals.

In today's fast-paced world, it's crucial to understand how to present yourself professionally in different mediums. Whether you're communicating in person, in writing, or online, you need to be aware of how you come across and how you can make a positive impression.
The Perspectives: Professional Communication course is designed to help students understand the expectations of communicating and behaving professionally in a business environment. The course explores the importance of various verbal and non-verbal communication mediums and will give students an understanding of proper business etiquette in a variety of contexts. Students will also be introduced to strategies for communicating professionally in person, in writing, and online. These takeaways will be invaluable as they progress in their career, enabling them to present themself in the best possible light and achieve success in their professional life.
This course introduces the essential steps towards communicating your personal brand in a professional setting. We will discuss how you are expected to communicate and act in a professional business environment in three different mediums: in person, in writing, and online.
Peer Group Coaching: Career Foundations is a program designed to provide you with an understanding of your personal strengths as a competitive job applicant, and how your skills could be effectively reflected through your resume, cover letter, elevator pitch, interviewing, and networking. This 10-week program will start out with an in-depth self-assessment, using tools such as StrengthsFinder or CareerLeader College, followed by sessions to help you identify job opportunities, refine job application skills, prepare elevator pitches, build a LinkedIn profile, and practice for interviews.
This program will allow you to work closely with the Director of the VSE Career Center, two Peer Coaches, and 4-6 of your peers. You will participate in weekly 90-minute group coaching sessions at the Career Center with a hybrid set-up, which will involve peer reviews and group discussions on related topics. An additional 2-4 hours per week will be needed to prepare for assignments.

Group Coaching - Developing Emotional Intelligence in Leadership, is designed to provide you with an understanding of emotional intelligence, and how it applies to your leadership skills both in the workplace and your personal life. This 8-week program will follow concepts from the book Emotional Capitalists by Martyn Newman, and include discussion regarding self-reliance, straightforwardness, optimism, self-actualization, relationship skills, self-confidence, and empathy along with exercises to set tangible goals that will help you develop these skills.
Through Group Coaching, you will work closely with the Director of the VSE Career Centre, a Peer Coach, and 6-8 of your peers. The course will involve weekly 75-minute group coaching sessions at the Career Centre, in addition to approximately 1-2 hours per week of work in preparation.
Interviewing can be a daunting task, whether it be over the phone, through video, or in person. Arguably the most stressful part of the job application process, this course was created to alleviate some of the stress by providing insight into this phase of the recruitment process as well as offer opportunities to practice.
This course will give you a holistic understanding of the steps you need to take before and after an interview. You will first learn general interview procedures and your expected preparation and behavior, after which the course will go further in-depth through each interview style you may come across. The second portion of the course will then take you through the process of negotiating job offers and beginning your professional development.
